Hopefully all of the injured are ganged up people. It does not in any way make the shootings acceptable but it does eliminate any COMPLETELY INNOCENT victims from being harmed. Crimes of this nature continue to provide confirmation of the inability of our criminal courts and penal systems to stop criminal assaults from being a part of our new Canadian way of life ... enabled in large part by the ongoing trudeau liberal judicial interpretation of the charter that securely ties the hands of the police and enables one guilty criminal after another to walk free. Unless their interpretations are changed the criminal gang situation in Canada will continue to deteriorate ... since the federal liberals and ndp continue to block any change that would remedy the situation.

Sadly, Vancouver has become little more than a nest of gangs. Our city and governments cripple the police efforts, immigration lets in who ever appears at our border willy nilly, and if they do get before the courts our judicial system pats them on their bottoms and says "now now, don't do it again" and ushers them back ont the street.

I hope none of these injured were innocent bystanders, as for the rest...pffft...

I don't see "The war on gangs" in Vancouver being any different then the "war on gangs" in Mexico. A lot of little "gangers" rousted and charged but .......... the big boys sit back in their penthouses with no worries. A lot of people say the gangs could not run without protection and one would wonder if corruption, in the many Police Forces that are arrayed in this province is a truth or just a fantasy . I know .......... as soon as anybody mentions police corruption the hammer comes down, not on any corrupt cops but on the person that asks the question. In many campaigns against evil the transgressors go free while the messengers feel the sting of the lash. I will be awaiting the posts of the Law enforcement officers and their bosses poo pooing any thoughts along these lines. After all we are "Canadians" we would never do any wrong. Time and history will tell.

I'll say it again. Abolish drug prohibition and you get rid of the crimes associated with prohibition, the chief one being gang warfare. It worked with alcohol Prohibition and will work with drugs. The problem is there are too many vested interests in the violence monopoly industry (aka cops) that like things the way they are. They represent a powerful anti-Prohibition interest group.

The police ordered a lockdown of VGH and 'other people' were redirected to other hospitals?
That is perhaps the most outrageous part: "if you're not a gangster or hangaround, you can go elsewhere for your medical care."

I bet we'll hear the police say it was for our own good - hmmm, when they could have secured the hospital, and focused their resources on protecting the 'other people' - and ensured the general public had access to timely medical care.

Any policy that closes a hospital to the general public because of fear of gangsters should be reviewed, and immediately changed.

I have absolutely no concerns that the VPD will get to the core of the sensless rot that permeates all societies .

No Van Dave, the whole point is NOT to make every little thing illegal. That's the problem. When you make things that people want, illegal, you invite the gangsters. Disarm them! Don't make these things illegal. The only things that should be illegal are crimes of initiatory violence against persons and property. That's it. That doesn't mean it is a good idea to do all these other things. In fact it may be "immoral" to do some of them but it shouldn't be illegal. "Crimes" should not include supplying people with things they want but should be reserved for those things we do not want such as rape, theft, assault, arson, etc.

You must force your NDP and Liberal MPs to represent society's wishes, and allow for tougher federal laws and sentences.

Prostitution? Force a million people to instantly become johns? Quit clinging to your FAILED drug war. It's time to try something that will work. Portugal is better off after they decriminalized all drugs in 2001. The swiss have a program where heroin addicts can get on a program of super cheap maintenance doses from pharmacies. If they are arrested for ANY crime they are cut off. There is no more heroin crime or heroin dealers.

The police talk a lot about how everyone is "known" to them. Is it that hard these days to put a gang-banger away or should we all be packing heat ? This city has been taken over by rich and powerful gangs. The odd small fry ends up in jail but the top dogs relax in their sumptuous Shaunessey mansions and their downtown penthouses. Funny thing about that Shangrila. I believe that all the units are sold but at after dark less than half of the lights are ever on. Could it be that most of the units have simply been bought as investments by rich Chinese ? I heard that there were 18,000 empty brand new units in Vancouver...and that was over a year ago. Something's really wrong when we let our city go to rich foreigners and born-&-bred Vancouverites can't afford to buy anything. And our loopy mayor seems to be more concerned about bike lanes and backyard chickens. Sigh....this ain't the city I grew up in.

Imagine a a center where a parent could take his/her newborn to be killed. Would not you plead to the parent to rethink their decision? Would you not be moved to reach out to them and the child? I would fall to my knees and pray or follow the parent into a restaurant as well if this were happening. So what is the difference between a center that kills newborns and a center that kills embryos and fetuses? Abortion needs to be a thing of the past and Adoption needs to be the new choice of unwanted pregnancies. Abortion is violence.

Yes, Denise1234...abortion is violence, and a woman should never be forced to undergo one against her will. The difference between a center that kills newborns and a center that kills embryos and fetuses is simple: newborns are viable life outside the mother, while embryos and fetuses are dependant on the mother and will die without her. I think if it is her health and safety that concerns us, we should let her decide without any pressure what *she* wants to do.

I thank God there is a center where a woman can have a safe, therapeutic abortion and not have to risk her life at the hands of a med school dropout.

Adoption does nothing to solve the problems of a woman who cannot afford -- physically, psychologically or financially -- to be pregnant. Adoption is an alternative to parenting, not an alternative to pregnancy. There are many resources (though not nearly enough) available to assist women with children who are already born, there are no resources to assist a woman with a pregnancy. No one else can carry a fetus for a woman, after all.

Until anti-choicers stop conflating embryos, fetuses and living children, and start understanding that women seek abortions because they don't want to be pregnant, not because they don't want to be mothers (and in fact that many are already mothers) there is no way to find common ground, because the anti-choicers aren't operating within the sphere of reality.

When abortion was illegal, women died in botched abortions or self-inflicted abortions. Whether you agree with abortion or not, I think you can agree that when the woman is killing herself to abort, maybe adoption ISN'T a viable option! What a woman does with her body is none of your business. Even if I was to concede abortion involves another person (which I'm not) that other person is not you. Keep your nose out of other people's business. Sidewalk counseling is violence and IT needs to be a thing of the past.

Actually, when my tax dollars are paying for abortion- it is my business. When abortion is single-handedly destroying the family- the building blocks of society- than it is my business. If there was a kid getting his skull bashed in inside the variety store you were buying your cigarettes at- would you not do something about it? I'm sure to any one on the right wing that this is going to come off as another "hug a thug" liberal posts. But I'm not advocating that we ignore Khadr's involvement - rather that we allow him a chance to rehabilitate through supervised education, keeping his "crimes" in context with the fact that he was pressured into joining Al Qaeda by his terrorist father.

Let's say if she's got laid off from a job because of the current recession, if she and the family are tight about the money, should she "push this kind of big box on the street" or should she quickly find a job in a local business to earn some living?

Be realistic, it's not saying art is not important. It's just not that important than the "regular business" as this is a dounting time for the local economy. If you ever learned Economics or just had some common sense, you would know that pursuing arts is something when you are well-off enough to feed yourself. In a simple language, when you only have $50 in your pocket and it's your entire asset, sadly to say, will you buy food or buy a piece of art?

If you have anybody in your family got laid off from the job or you know anyone is short of money, you should have known better than fighting for this kind of thing. Your work here is creative, but overall, it's stupid and short-sighted.

Obviously you are not artists, or have the slightest idea of its social, cultural and economic importance. It's not a one man show, she is part of a community protesting about the cuts of funding. During the Cultural Olympiad times, where everything seems to be flourishing in Vancouver, yet after the Olympics arts and culture are going to crash. This is not only a statement of resistance, it is an act of solidarity with thousands of people whose life's are being affected. No other province has cut arts funding during this recession. Many provinces have actually increased funding, because it is proven that this is a form of stimulus that works for the whole economy, recession or no.

Arts funding, as studies worldwide and in BC have repeatedly shown, is a lucrative investment that makes strong economic sense. According to the government's own calculations, every dollar given to the arts comes back immediately as 1.36 in general revenue, and that figure is actually much higher when you take spinoff industries that rely on the arts (tourism, IT, film etc.) into account - studies show it's anywhere from $6-$12 and sometimes higher.

There is incontrovertible evidence that elimination of this major employment and industrial sector - which employs over 80,000 people - will be harmful to the whole economy. Maybe that job that your family member just lost Eric, was in the arts and culture sector. Its not about spending your last $50 dollars. And this are just pure economic reasons, don't get me started on the other matters. So before you make conclusions check out some of the statistics...

well, if you cannot accept both positive and negative comments, you shouldn't and don't deserve being an artist. you have what you believe, which is wonderful. we have what we believe. the key to persuade government for lots of things, not just art, is to present the sense of emergency and the so-called "importance" to them. maybe you need to consider using more effective way to get what you want - you want the budget to be raised, don't you? seriously, government won't care if the case is not a high priority. i'm here not to support any of the above comments, but there are really some better ways to make your voice heard out loud by the government and make them put more money in for the arts. good luck on that.

Canada needs more education in art understanding and art history, not everything is just hockey, the Artists here need more, not just money, if the community start to understand art and taste, then Art will get more money and support too. First - make all Art Galleries and Museums and Art events free for all Kids and students so they can get the information. Second - don't focus just at Native Art, which is over supported with no improving quality.

This is a fantastic piece and idea. Brava for the artist. The Olympics is a Wake for the arts in this province. Look at your opening ceremony you puffing galoots ... who provided the entertainment, dancers, musicians, poets, artists -- all of whom are now going to be unfunded by this cuts in this backwards thinking provincial govt's budget. This artist deserves utmost respect for this brave statement and investment of her creative and physical labour. I hope visitors return to their countries in the knowledge this is to become a no fund province when it comes to arts. Shameful. Internationally embarrassing. When you are draped in your flag remember you have no culture if you don't invest in your arts and culture.

There are many ways to feel useful but if society won't offer otions, th gangs will (and do). That's the intent behind such programs - create options. Will it work for all - no, but it might work for many.

The Guardian Angels offered their services to clean up Winnipeg streets of this riff-raff, but were refused by the city.
Within their mandate the WPS are reactive, whereas the Guardian Angels are proactive in cleaning up the streets. Gangs are a major problem in Winnipeg and require an aggressive proactive approach to make the streets safe again.
It's presently out of control and it's time the city reconsider the assistance of the Guardian Angels.

What these politicians need to understand that "real" change comes from inside, not by futile programs that eventually run out of money.

This should come as no surprise. Women choose different occupations from men. That results in different salaries.How many women work in dangerous (but high paying) jobs like in the oil fields? Please read the article carefully before commenting....it said "women (...) earned just 63 per cent the salary of similarly educated men in 2007". Similarly educated!!! That doesn't mean women are making less because they are are all working as social workers and teachers (which is a stereotype by the way). It means that a woman engineer or a woman doctor is only making 63 percent of what a male doctor or engineer is making. And that is truly a shame.

I am not sure who are the researchers and how they find these findings.Late spring we were told women are making more money than men. We were also told Immigrants are doing way better than their counter parts Canadian?Yet, finding telling us immigrants are less paid then Canadian born? Men do not make more money because they work in dangerous jobs. A woman with a Master's degree in Library science will make signficantly less than a man with a Master's or Bachelor's degree in Economics. One field is female dominated and the other is male dominated, hence the difference in pay. Pay equity issues are well documented and women do make significantly less than their male counterparts who have similar education and jobs.

The reason women have less jobs is because most of them limit themselves from intensive labour jobs. Dont get me wrong I myself being a male dont like doing intense labour jobs as well, but those percentage of males that don't graduate take on several labour jobs.

Good point Jay. Warren Farrell's book, "The Myth of Male Power', did a great job of demonstrating not only why the gender disparity exists, but of also showing that when apples are compared to apples, women earn as much if not more than men.

This article presents the research in a certain way that favors a certain point of view. A classic problem with a research made to prove a theory, not a theory built from a research. What are the types of fields that women with high school diploma work in? Could the fields in which they work in be the least paid ones? A office clerk, a receptionist, a clientele support earns less then a construction worker or a factory worker, that is for certain. There is a huge difference between saying that gender determines the salary then to say women choose fields that are less lucrative. It would be interesting to add these statistics to the article, otherwise, the research is incomplete or the article is trying to push it's point of view by omitting details.

it is quite amazing men can earn more -- given how alienating the Canadian education has become for males and how hard it is to graduate high school under the insane curriculum mandates. This remains, in part perhaps because "trades"are less easily outsourced than white collar work. I expect to see the most government functions outsourced in a decade. You can pay your municipal taxes, water bills or CRA account -- if you have any money -- in either Bangalore, Hyderabad or Mumbai
